Former President Jimmy Carter, 99, is facing significant challenges in his final days, according to his family.
Grandson Jason Carter told Southern Living Magazine that the elderly Democrat struggles to wake up on some days, 16 months into his hospice care in Plains, Georgia.

The 39th president’s family still visits him most days, despite the new found challenges.
President Carter and his wife chose to begin hospice care back in February 2023 at the Plains facility he founded in 1961, People magazine reported.
Another grandson, Hugo Wentzel, shared in a statement last year that his grandfather “decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.”
“He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”
Jason recently explained, “[Plains] is the place that has given [President Carter] the greatest support and it is the only place where he would go through this part of his life.”
“That’s his home in every way, and he really cherished that time and that support.”
“I think the fact that he and my grandmother both came from that small town — it’s a 600-person village, really — and it’s not near any interstate and it is truly out in the country and it is a fundamental part of who he is and who he has been for his whole life.”
Jason, who currently lives in Atlanta, further emphasized, “There is no other place in the world that he would be at peace other than Plains.”
The public, once familiar with seeing Carter teach Sunday school and help build homes well into his 90s, is now witnessing a different side of him, Jason noted.
Jason, 48, also mentioned that the recent death of Carter’s wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, in November has deeply affected him.

“After 77 years of marriage… I just think none of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason said.
“We have to embrace that fact, that there’s things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.”
“[He’s] experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process,” he added.

President Carter will be buried next to his wife near the Plains home they shared for 77 years when he eventually passes, People highlighted.
The couple has deeded their property to the National Park Service, which plans to convert the homestead into a museum showcasing his presidency from 1977 to 1981.

Jason shared, “It is such an American story… to go to Plains and see the house that my grandparents built and lived in for all their time and came home to after being president.”
“It is a really incredible story to go from that little town to the White House and back again.”
The U.S. Secret Service expressed its commitment to serve former President Jimmy Carter for his remaining years last February, Resist the Mainstream reported.
“Rest easy Mr. President,” Secret Service communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said on X at the time. “We will be forever by your side.”
