Here Are the Infamous Five Congressmen To Be Booted From the House

Members of Congress have been censored and impeached, but seldom have they been expelled. Many believe a member of the House is about to make history.

Since the first United States Congress was seated in 1789, only five representatives have been removed from office. Most of the expulsions occurred during the chaos of the Civil War.

The Washington Examiner reported that Rep, James Traficant (D-OH) was removed from office 21 years ago.

Rep. George Santos (R-NY), may become the sixth representative to be removed from office. Santos has been accused of lying, misrepresenting his education and business credentials during a campaign, and misallocating campaign funds.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) made the recommendation to expel Santos.

An expulsion vote is expected this week.

When confronted by reporters about the expected vote, Santos ranted about Israel and how people who were not supportive of the Hebrew nation should not be permitted in the building.

The five House members who have been removed from office by their peers are:

Rep. Jon Reid (MO): He was removed during the Civil War for supporting southern states’ efforts to succeed from the Union.

Rep. John Clark (MO): He was removed during the Civil War for supporting southern states’ efforts to succeed from the Union.

Rep. Henry Burnett (KY): He was removed during the Civil War for supporting southern states’ efforts to succeed from the Union.

Similarly, 11 senators were removed from office during the Civil War when they did not return to Washington, D.C., as ordered by President Abraham Lincoln.

Rep. Michael Myers (D-PA) was removed from office in 1980 amid bribery scandals. The yearslong sting operation led to six state legislators and one mayor stepping down from office. Myers was sentenced to three years in prison.

Rep. James Traficant (D-OH) was removed in 2022 after being charged with misusing campaign funds, receiving bribes and harassing his staff. Traficant successfully defended himself against some charges but ultimately was sentenced to seven years in prison.
