Famed comedian Richard Lewis died on February 27, 2024, at 9:22 pm. A copy of his death certificate,  shared by The Blast, noted that Lewis died from “cardiopulmonary arrest.”

On Monday, Breitbart News confirmed the cause of death, writing that Lewis died after suffering a heart attack. It is believed his death was connected with his multiyear battle with a progressive, degenerative, neurological disorder.

The death certificate listed Lewis’ secondary cause of death as “Parkinson’s Disease.”

The comedian was aware of his Parkinson’s diagnosis for at least two years, but chose not to disclose the news to his fans until last April.

Lewis shocked and saddened many fans when he posted on X: “I have Parkinson’s disease. But I’m under a doctor’s care, and everything is cool.”

Soberly noting the prognosis, Lewis added, “I’m finished with standup. I’m just focusing on writing and acting” from here on out.

Lewis added: “But you know, the last three and a half years, I’ve had sort of a rocky time … and people have said, ‘Gee I haven’t heard from you, are you still touring?’ Well, here’s really what happened.”

Lewis shared that he began to experience physical challenges about three and a half years ago, which led to a decision “not to be on the road” anymore.

“I said, ‘You know, I’m at the top of my game,’” the comic added. “After 50 years almost, I’m just going to call it quits.’ And I felt great about that.”

Variety described Lewis as a “celebrated stand-up comedian.”

RTM previously reported Lewis’ career included a leading role in “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” the ABC sitcom “Anything but Love,” and big screen performances in “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” (1993), “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995) and “Hugo Pool” (1997) among others.

In 2021, Lewis said: “I’ve devoted my life to comedy and my sobriety the last almost 27 years. I’m overwhelmed with joy right now,” Lewis said. “I never learned how to keep joy in my head for more than a minute, but I’m breaking all records for my life today.”

HBO said of Lewis’ passing: “We are heartbroken to learn that Richard Lewis has passed away. His comedic brilliance, wit, and talent were unmatched. Richard will always be a cherished member of the HBO and Curb Your Enthusiasm families, our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all the fans who could count on Richard to brighten their days with laughter.”

Lewis is survived by his wife, Joyce Lapinsky.
