Major Recalls of Popular Pet Food Brands Announced Over Bacterial Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a joint warning and pet food recall.

The major announcement warns consumers that bacterial contamination in certain dog and cat foods may pose a serious health risk.

According to the CDC, the recall targets multiple popular brands of dog and cat food, including Victor brand Hi-Pro Plus dog food, Super Premium Dog Food, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food and Mid America pet food.

The recall notice urges consumers to dispose of these products, warning people “not to touch them if possible, as they may be contaminated with salmonella,” according to a report in the Daily Caller.

The CDC reported that at least seven people have become ill after having contact with contaminated food. Though one person has been hospitalized, no deaths have been reported. Stats on animals is not available at this time.

An excerpt from a statement issued by the CDC read: “People in this outbreak got sick from touching recalled dog food, touching things like dog bowls that contained the dog food, or touching the poop or saliva of dogs that were fed the dog food. Most of the sick people in this outbreak are infants.”

A CBS report noted that the recall focuses on dry pet food produced by Mid America pet food in Texas.

The FDA encouraged pet owners to monitor their animal’s behavior and look for signs of lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. The FDA also warned consumers that though pets may only exhibit mild symptoms, such as decreased appetite, they can still transmit deadly bacteria to other animals and humans.

The Daily Caller noted that this is the second major pet food recall this year. In August, the FDA issued warnings and recalls after products from Food Lion and Kroeger were suspected of carrying listeria.
