Pelosi Says Trump’s Obamacare Repeal Would Be a ‘Bad Political Move’ for Republicans

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who has a notably low favorability rating, has criticized former President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding “repealing and replacing Obamacare.”

Pelosi’s comments follow Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s acknowledgment that Obamacare “resulted in raising, not lowering, healthcare fees.”

RTM previously reported that last Friday, the Wall Street Journal sharply criticized Warren for “recently coming to an epiphany about industry consolidation and price increases caused by the healthcare law.”

Pelosi, an ardent anti-Trumper, vowed to oppose Trump should he win reelection and attempt to repeal the “Affordable Care Act.”

According to the Washington Examiner, Pelosi called Trump’s reported plan to repeal the legislation a “bad political move that Democrats would take full advantage of.”

During a campaign stop last weekend, Trump said he was “seriously looking at alternatives” to Obamacare. Democrats have attempted to stifle attempts to revamp or replace the legislation that many decry as too expensive.

Pelosi, who helped ratify the legislation in 2010, said of Trump: “There are so many reasons why this was a bad political move on the part of Trump, except he doesn’t share the value of the health and financial well-being of the American people.”

“And for that reason,” Pelosi said, “[Trump] has offered an opportunity for the greatest contrast, which the public understands more clearly than any other issue.”

Pelosi continued, “The former president has given people an opportunity to understand more clearly what it means to them.”

Pelosi said of Republicans: “So this … anti-government attitude … they have … people have to know about it. We don’t want to be fearmongers, but we have to make a contrast, and we have to have clarity about it. … This is an assault, on you, your health, your financial security, and the health of America.”

Pelosi added, “It’s not just about healthcare. It’s about a healthier country.”

Pelosi’s criticism of Trump’s possible intent to repeal Obamacare was also criticized by President Joe Biden, who claimed Trump had “called for cuts that could rip away health insurance for tens of millions Americans and Medicaid. They just don’t give up. But guess what? We won’t let these things happen.”

Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) also has made this issue a 2024 campaign issue, claiming that Republicans are “going to continue to fail” if they join Trump in a repeal effort.

“If [Trump] wants to talk about that, he’s going to fail,” Peters added. “It’s a winning issue for us. We’ll take it any day.”
