Xi Jinping Warned Biden That He Intends To Take Taiwan by Any Means Necessary: ‘Timing Has Not Yet Been Decided’

During a recent summit in San Francisco, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed a firm message to President Joe Biden, stating that Beijing intends to reunify Taiwan with mainland China, though the timeline for this action remains undecided.

This declaration was made in the presence of numerous American and Chinese officials. Xi expressed a preference for a peaceful reunification, addressing public speculations by U.S. military leaders about a potential forceful takeover in 2025 or 2027. Xi refuted these predictions, emphasizing the absence of a set timeframe.

Prior to the summit, Chinese officials requested that Biden publicly support China’s goal of peaceful unification with Taiwan and oppose Taiwanese independence. The White House, however, declined this request. The National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, chose not to comment on this matter.

This summit, aimed at easing tensions between the U.S. and China, gained particular significance due to China’s increasingly aggressive stance toward Taiwan and the upcoming presidential election in Taiwan, a self-governing democratic island.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham reacted to the news with concern, advocating for bipartisan efforts to strengthen Taiwan’s defense and prepare severe sanctions against China in case of an invasion.

“This story as reported is beyond unnerving,” Graham said in a press release. “I will be working with Democratic and Republican Senators to do two things quickly. First, create a robust defense supplemental for Taiwan and second, draft pre-invasion sanctions from hell to impose on China if they take action to seize Taiwan.”

During the summit, Xi’s approach was described as blunt and candid but not confrontational.

“His language was no different than what he has always said. He is always tough on Taiwan. He’s always had a tough line,” a U.S. official familiar with the conversation noted. Xi’s stance on Taiwan has been a major concern for the Biden administration, which is keen on avoiding military conflict with China.

Xi, at last year’s Chinese Communist Party Congress, warned of a military attack on Taiwan if it declares independence with foreign support. He emphasized that this threat targets only external interference and a minority of separatists advocating for Taiwanese independence.

Xi also expressed concerns about the candidates in Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election and the U.S.’s influence on Taiwan. When Biden urged China to respect Taiwan’s electoral process, Xi acknowledged the importance of peace but stressed the need for a resolution.

Following the summit, Biden reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to the “One China” policy, stating, “We maintain an agreement that there is a ‘One China’ policy. I’m not going to change that. That’s not going to change.”

Hua Chunying, a Chinese official present at the meeting, later posted on social media that Xi had emphasized to Biden and other U.S. officials the critical and sensitive nature of the Taiwan issue in China-U.S. relations. Hua asserted that the U.S. should support China’s peaceful reunification, declaring, “China will realize reunification, and this is unstoppable.”
