The View Co-Host Sara Haines Smears Traditional Latin Mass As ‘Cult-Like,’ ‘Extremist’ In Anti-Catholic Rant

Co-hosts on “The View” joined each other in expressing outrage over Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s recent pro-family, pro-mother, and pro-life remarks last week.

The whole exchange consisted of many surprising moments, like Whoopi Goldberg defending Butker’s graduation speech at the onset of the discussion.

One host even went as far as to smear Catholicism as “a very extreme religion.”

The Blaze reported that Sara Haines, a self-described “slightly left leaning moderate,” was particularly irked by Butker’s expression of conservative Christian beliefs.

“What this man is doing is not just a devout Catholic,” Haines would say during one moment of the airing. “This is someone who is practicing something called the Traditional Latin Mass, which is divergent from the majority of Catholics.”

“It’s compared to being cult-like and extremist like some religions in the Middle East and Asia,” she continued. “This is a very extreme religion.”

The Blaze would highlight that neither the rules of prayer nor the rules of faith in the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) diverge from the Ordinary Form of the Mass, familiar to most practicing Catholics.

It added that Haines’ characterization of the TLM as “cult-like” amounts to a smear against traditional adherents worldwide and the historical celebration of Catholic Mass predating the 1960s.

Her attack on Butker also hinges on the presumption that his comments are informed by his participation in the TLM, rather than the Church’s moral teaching, which has been codified in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and reiterated by both the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

“And what bothers me about that as a Christian is that when people abuse Christianity, they often not only cherry pick from the Bible, they misinterpret and lie by omission, by taking out parts that would have explained something a little better,” Haines said, furthering her criticisms of Butker’s speech.

“So, what I can say to [Butker], as a Christian, is if you’re using this to oppress people or hold them down you’re not walking with Jesus. If you are using the religion, if you’re more obsessed with the religious rituals and practices than you are with the word of Jesus, you’re not walking with Jesus,” she added.

“And if you’re using it for the judgment of others and as a weapon to beat people down you’re also not walking with Jesus,” Haines continued. “So, I would really encourage him, really encourage him to find the best parts of faith and not diverge into extremist beliefs,” she concluded, clasping her hands as if in prayer.

Haines’ comments expectedly resonated poorly with various Catholics.

“Hey @sarahaines, please expand on what’s wrong with ‘some religions in the Middle East.’ Fascinated to know what you mean by that,” the communications director for Utah Sen. Mike Lee said.

Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles wrote, “According to @sarahaines on @TheView, it’s okay to be a liberal Protestant. But all other kinds of Christians—particularly those pesky Catholics who hold to the perennial teaching of the Church—are not to be tolerated!”

Liz Wheeler posted, “Part of me wants to laugh at this & shred Sara Haines for being a total dunce.”

“Like… does Sara REALLY not know how many billions of Catholics have celebrated the Latin Mass over the course of centuries? Are ALL those billions of Catholics ‘extremists’ & ‘cult like’?” she added.

“If you answer yes… then maybe you work at the FBI,” she continued.
